On Saturday a small bunch of peace activists entered Shannon Airport and distributed flowers and petals in rememberance of all the people killed in the Iraq and Afghan wars, and calling for an end of military use of Shannon, be it the US going to Iraq, Afghanistan or Iran, the Israeli Air Force, or the Russians and Belgians arming South and Central America.
The date co-incided with the withdrawal of World Airways from Shannon. World is now routing its military flights through Leipzig in Germany. Although the Shannon option provided the most fuel effiecient route over the Atlantic, World Airways contends that it can cut out a crew change by using Leipzig and having a short route to the M.E. from Europe.
World has brought most of the 600,000 troops through Shannon for the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. read full story / add a comment

In an article search of the Irish Times archive for the period June 2005 to June 2006, the search term "Iraq lancet" gave 3 results, the last of which was printed in December 2005.

A search, for the period May 2006 to June 2006, using the term "Iraq US troop" found that the number of US military casualties was reported 8 times in less than two months, only one of these reports compared these figures with Iraqi fatalities. read full story / add a comment

Shannon airport is being heavily used today by the US military to move troops to and from the Middle East. Between 9am and 10am there were three troop carriers, World Airways, ATA, and North American at the airport with over 500 troops on board, and likely to be carrying about 500 M-16 automatic rifles, and the same number of 9mm automatic pistols, and assorted munitions.
Military prisoners in shackles may also have been on board, as this is a regular practice by the US military.
Also at the airport was an executive jet, that has been reported as making frequent visits to RAF bases, N750JJ. Further investigation is called for, but this is unlikely to come from the Gardai, who have ignored the vast majority of complaints, or requests for searches of US aircraft, made to them so far.
Nevertheless, I made the statement of complaint and request for aircraft to be searched which is included below.

Abu Baker Deghayes’ brother Omar has been in Guantanamo Bay prison for five years. The Irish Anti War Movement has organised a tour of meetings next week where Abu Baker will speak about the illegal kidnapping, detention and torture of his brother Omar Deghayes.

Omar and his family left Libya 1986 after his father, a democrat and trade unionist, was assassinated by Colonel Gaddafi's regime. In 2001 Omar travelled to Afghanistan where he met and married his wife and had a son. When war broke out they moved to Pakistan. Omar was arrested by bounty-hunters and sold to the US Military. The only "evidence" for his arrest was a video from the Spanish authorities allegedly showing Omar. But experts have confirmed that the person in the video isn't Omar. While in prison Omar was tortured using pepper spray in his eyes, so much was used that he is now completely blind in one eye. The US authorities also allowed Libyan interrogators to interview him. They threatened him, saying, "In here I cannot do anything, but if I meet you later I will kill you”. read full story / add a comment

This aircraft was seen by Edward horgan at Shannon airport on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm.
It took off about two hours later.
Connor Cregan got some photos of the take off which will be published later.
It has been seen regularly at Frankfurt in Germany. It is not yet clear whether it is controlled by the US Airforce or by the CIA. It is unusual for US Airforce to operate such unmaked planes. The Irish green white and gold colour scheme is a new innovation. It makes a change from World Airways flying in Aer Lingus colours. read full story / add a comment

Two weeks ago, on a routine visit to monitor the on going war crimes that is the Bertie Ahern led governments facilitation of the of the US military troops and intelligence services (CIA) at Shannon Airport, I witnessed a new devolvement at Irelands second international airport. Sitting on the main apron in front of the terminal building was an Israeli Air Force 707. After a while a group of military types disembarked and jumped into the “Fixed Base Operator” minibus. They were taken to the Great Southern Hotel where they billeted overnight.

Initially I thought this an emergency landing. Shannon Airport has been used on numerous occasions by the US Air Force to land aircraft in trouble. The latest happening only months ago when a C17 reported to be carrying Helium (yeah right) landed safely.

Today the Israeli Air Force is Back in Shannon.

In spite of efforts by Euro MEP Sean O'Neachtain and others to discredit the facts that the CIA has been using Shannon airport for its torture rendition programme, the truth is gradually leaking out. It may take several years for so-called "concrete evidence" such as lists of tortured prisoners who were "rendered" through Shannon, and details of Irish government ministers knowledge and approval of these crimes, to become public, but this will come too. read full story / add a comment

For the record, the group of four, Tim Hourigan, Mary Kelly, Deirdre Morgan and Edward horgan, who made a similar submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs on 20 Dec 2005, also offered to make a similar presentation to the EU Committee. The EU declined on cost grounds, and invited me only. However, I have received substantial help from a dedicated group of peace activists, mainly Irish, but with a few significant non-Irish contributers.

Over the past month a Garda has confirmed to me in confidence that they have directed not to search US CIA aircraft or US military aircraft at Shannon airport, and that many of the Gardai disagree with this directive because it means “… turning a blind eye to the probability of wrongdoing, and we all know what terrible things such policies have led to in the past.”

In my submission to the European Parliament I called a spade a spade, and referred several times to the unlawful killing of over 100,000 in Ir read full story / add a comment

I went to the European Parliament in Brussels to tell the Parliament what I knew of Ireland’s involvement in the unlawful rendition for torture process at Shannon airport. I insisted on linking the extraordinary rendition process with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the combined serial abuses of international law that these wars and the torture processe involved. To a large extent I was telling the EU parliamentary special committee what they did not want to hear – “don’t mention the wars” – I told them anyway, in the brief summary of my submission that the 15 minute time slot allowed me. My main submission was thirty-seven pages long, with 45 separate attachments and it became clear very quickly that very few had even read the executive summary of my submission, and some of those who did, read it only with the intention of trying to discredit it, and discredit me. The Irish Times report on Friday captured the tone of the parliamentarians response “the witness failed to present t read full story / add a comment

Speaking to MEP's in Brussels on Thursday, former Irish army commandant and UN peacekeeper Edward horgan said that the Parliament's TDIP Committee investigating the CIA's activities in Europe must call at least four Irish Government ministers to face questions about torture-related abuses at Irish airports: the Ministers for Justice, Foreign Affairs, Defence and Transport.

The Department of Transport's figures for the first quarter of 2006 show that over 1,300 armed US troops are passing through Shannon Airport on their way to or from Iraq each day. At the same time, as documented in horgan’s presentation, flight logs of aircraft owned or operated by the CIA show that Shannon has served as one of the most important nodes in a network of airports used by the agency to conduct its programme of "extraordinary renditions" for torture.

It is a matter of particular urgency for horgan that hundreds of undocumented prisoners are in imminent danger of suffering summary execution in order to conceal crimes of torture committed under the extraordinary renditions programme, and he thinks it is most likely that some have already been murdered.

In a perversion of justice, members of government have demanded that concerned citizens present conclusive evidence of crimes of torture committed at Shannon Airport, while directing airport security staff and members of the Garda Síochána to harass, detain and arrest these same activists – including horgan – in their attempts to gather such evidence. read full story / add a comment

On 20th April, while many are enjoying Easter holidays, Edward horgan will be making a significant submission to the European Parliament special committee investigating Extraordinary Rendition for Torture, in Brussels. He has been invited by the committee to make a special presentation focusing on the use of Shannon airport for rendering prisoners for torture and the Irish Government's complicity in this torture process. read full story / add a comment
